The Coptic Museum – Cairo


- The museum is situated by southern gate of the fortress of babylon. currently the museum is open to public from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekdays. The building which houses the coptic museum was the former place of morcos smeika , it has been used as a museum since 1908 , though not officially opened until 1910 and became a national museum in 1931. since 1947 when a large new wing was opened the collection has grown to over 15.000 objects .

- The hanging church is devoted to the holy virgin mary and was built around 300 a.d. The name is derived from its location atop the southwestern gate of the fortress of babylon in old or coptic ,cairo with its nave suspended above the passage. The church got its present shape in 1775 . The church can be reached by narrow flight of twenty nine steps . Beyond the covered entrance there is an open court with a fountain . The main body of the current church features a central nave and two narrow aisles separated by a row of three old white marble columns spanned by white arches .

- The museum is opened daily , from 9.00 a.m. until 7.00 p.m. The museum is located in the center of cairo , in tahrir square , it was built in 1901 during the reign of khedive abbas hilmi II . The french egyptologist auguste mariette who founded the museum in 1858 became the director of antiquities . His remains lie in a sarcophagus in the garden of the museum . There are 120.000 artifacts in the museum . for a visitor to see the entire museum and look at each piece for just one minute , he would need 120.000 minutes .
